catch-22
: 진퇴양난, 딜레마
a problem that cannot be solved because the solution to the problem is inherent in the problem itself.

ex. I can't get a job because I haven't got anywhere to live but I can't afford a place to live until I get a job—it's a catch-22 situation.

살 곳이 없으면 직장을 구할 수가 없는데, 직장을 잡기까지는 집세를 낼 형편이 안 되니 그야말로 딜레마죠.

The government's regional development plan is recently stuck in a catch-22.

최근 들어 정부의 지역개발계획이 진퇴양난에 빠졌다.

It is an awful Catch 22 we're in.

우리는 끔찍한 모순적 딜레마에 빠져있다.

epitome

dichotomy
: 양분, 이분
the contrast between two things that are opposed

ex. There is often a dichotomy between what politicians say and what they do.

Many people look upon the world as a dichotomy between good and evil.

많은 사람들이 선과 악이라는 이분법으로 세상을 바라본다.

: 무수함, 무수히 많음
a great number of people or things

ex. He has lost a myriad of money due to the exit scam.

그는 투자 회수 사기 때문에 많은 돈을 잃었다.

Parents face myriad problems raising their children.

부모들은 아이들을 기를 때 수많은 문제에 직면한다.

He has a myriad of enemies.

그는 적이 엄청나게 많다.

credence
: 신빙성, (무엇을 사실이라고)믿음
the belief as to the truth of something

ex. How can you give credence to a person like him?

어떻게 그 같은 놈을 믿니?

They could give no credence to the findings of the survey.

그들은 그 실태 조사 결과를 전혀 믿을 수가 없었다.

The story deserves no credence.

그 이야기는 신용의 가치가 없다.

I cannot give any credence to that statement.

나는 그 성명을 전혀 신용할 수 없다.

Historical evidence lends credence to his theory.

역사적 증거가 그의 이론에 신빙성을 부여해 준다.

lend to : -에 가담하다, 힘을 빌려주다; -에 도움이 되다
ex. This dress will lend charm to you.

최근 들어 대체 의학이 사람들의 신뢰를 얻어 가고 있다.

 

malaise
: (특정 상황, 집단 내에 존재하는 설명, 규명하기가 힘든)문제들(불안감)
: (특정한 문제로 표출되지는 않지만 전반적으로 존재하는)불만감(불쾌감)
a vague feeling of physical discomfort or uneasiness as an early sign of an illness

ex. The demonstrations reflect a deep malaise in society.

그 집회들은 사회 내 깊은 불만감을 반영한다.

Borrow and spend, and the resulting debt, are a malaise that includes not only the Federal government, but industry and individuals as well.

대출과 소비, 그리고 그에 따른 부채는 연방정부 뿐만 아니라 산업과 개인도 포함되는 문제이다.

Society itself must come into the picture, and the deep malaise inflicting it must be considered.

sycophant
: 아첨꾼, 알랑쇠
person who tries to gain attention by flattering wealthy or influential people

ex. He is such a sycophant.

그는 완전 아첨꾼이야.

Once they realize that you are a total sycophant, you will be no use to them.

당신이 완전히 아첨꾼이라는 것을 그들이 알게 되면 당신은 그들에게 불필요한 존재가 될 것이다.

dilettante
: 딜레탕트, 호사가
person who cultivates an interest in something without learning in-depth information

ex. She's a professional artist, not a dilettante.

그녀는 전문적인 화가지, 아마추어가 아니야.

There is something of the dilettante about him.

그에게는 좀 호사가 같은 면이 있어.

But he was no fragile dilettante.

: 천정 / 정점, 절정
the top; peak; highest point of something

ex. I felt I was in my zenith.

난 절정에 다다른 기분이었다.

He is at the zenith of his political career.

그는 자기 정치 생활의 정점에 있었다.

She has passed her zenith.

그녀는 정점을 넘겼다.

His popularity reached its zenith.

그의 인기는 절정에 다다랐다.

The election campaign reached its zenith.
