euphemism : 완곡한 표현

ex. The word "expired" is a euphemism for "died."
'끝났다'는 단어는 '죽었다'는 의미의 완곡한 표현이다.

mundane : 이승의, 현세의 ; 세속적인(earthly) / 재미없는, 일상적인

ex. The philosopher dealt with spiritual things, ignoring the mundane ones.
그 철학자는 세속적인 것을 무시하면서 정신적인 것을 다뤘다.

incongruous : 적절치 않은, 앞뒤가 맞지 않은

ex. The play was so incongruous that it seemed to be the work of several authors.
그 희곡은 너무 앞뒤가 맞지 않아서 여러 작가들의 작품인 것처럼 보였다.

 

 

 

condolence : 애도, 조문, 조의

ex. When my neighbor's dog was run over, we sent a condolence card.
이웃집 개가 차에 치였을 때, 우리는 조문 카드를 보냈다.

 

 

stipulate : 조건을 명시하다, 규정(명기)하다

ex. We repudiated the contract because it did not stipulate a cost of living bonus.
우리는 그 계약을 안 하겠다고 거절했다. 생계비 수당을 조건으로 명시하지 않았기 때문이다.
