: 완곡 어법(표현)
A word of expressions substituted for one considered to be rude, unpleasant, or embarrassing
왼곡 어법이란 공격적이거나 다소 강도가 센 어떤 것을 표현하는 데 완곡하게 표현하는 것을 말한다.
가장 대표적인 예로, die(죽다) 대신에 pass away(가버리다), be no more(이제는 없다)가 있으나, 그 외에도 일상에서 사용되는 다양한 완곡 어구들이 있다.
1.
To let someone go
: -를 해고하다
to fire someone from their job
ex. We’re going to have to let you go.
우리는 너를 해고해야 할 것이다.
I was let go (from my job).
나는 해고되었어.
Five hundred employees were let go because of the company's downsizing.
그 회사의 구조 조정으로 500명의 직원이 해고당했다.
Business was slack and many employees were let go.
불경기 탓으로 많은 종업원들이 해고되었다.
slack : 느슨한, (느슨하게)늘어진 / (사업이) 부진한, 한산한 / (못마땅)해이한, 느슨한 / (밧줄 등의)느슨한 부분 / (인력금전공간 등의)느슨한 사용 / (하는 일에)해이해지다(태만해지다)
ex. She was staring into space, her mouth slack.
그녀는 입을 헤 벌린 채 허공을 응시하고 있었다.
He's been very slack in his work lately.
그가 최근에 자기 일에 몹시 해이해졌다.
There's very little slack in the budget.
그 예산에는 느슨한 부분이 극히 적다.
The rope suddenly went slack.
밧줄이 갑자기 느슨해졌다.
They were slack in answering.
그들은 답을 늦게 한다.
Business is slack recently.
경기가 요즘 침체 상태다.

(to be) between jobs
: 실직 상태인
to be temporarily unemployed
ex. I'm in between jobs these days.
난 요즘 일을 쉬고 있어.
We have a lot of leisure time in between jobs.
우리는 구직 중에 많은 여가 시간을 가지고 있다.
I was between jobs and my car was broken.
난 백수였고 내 차는 부숴졌었어.

to go number one
: 쉬하다
to pee
to go number two
: 응가를 하다, 변을 보다, 똥누다
to poo
ex. A: The train is leaving soon but I gotta run to the bathroom real quick.
A: 기차가 곧 떠날거지만, 나 화장실이 급해.
B: Well wait, number one or number two? You better hurry up because we don’t want to miss the train.
B: 잠깐 기다려, 소변이야 아니면 대변이야? 기차를 놓치고 싶지 않으니까 서두르는게 좋겠어.
If you’re going number one, you’ve got 10 more seconds.
소변을 볼거면, 10초 남았어.
I’m only asking is for your safety. Is it a number one or number two? Mm. Your silence indicates number two.
오로지 당신의 안전을 위해서 묻는겁니다. 소변입니까 아니면 대변입니까? 음 당신의 침묵을 보니 대변이군요.

to do (one’s) business
: 볼일을 보다, 용변을 보다
to poop
ex. Go ahead, puppy, do your business.
가서 용변을 봐라, 우리 강아지.
All right, man, go do your business.
알았어, 용변보고 와.
But you just do your business and get out as quick as you can.
하지만 용변을 보고 가능한한 신속히 나와라.
You can do your business six blocks east.
동쪽으로 여섯 블록 떨어진 곳에 화장실이 있어.

to powder (one’s) nose
: (여성이) 화장실에 가다
to go to the toilet
ex. I’m going to powder my nose.
나 화장실 다녀올께.
Now play nice boys while I go and powder my nose.
화장실에 다녀오는 동안 얌전히 있으렴.
Well, I need to powder my nose.
잠깐 화장실 좀 다녀 올게요.

big-boned
: 뼈대가 굵은, 골격이 우람한
describes a person who is overweight; fat
ex. My whole family is big-boned. It’s genetic.
우리 가족 모두가 골격이 우람해요. 유전적인 거죠.
I’m not fat, I’m big-boned.
나는 뚱뚱하지 않아, 뼈가 큰 거지.

love handles
: 허리의 군살
refers to excess fat around the waistline
ex. You have love handles.
당신 배에 군살이 쪘군요.
All fat cells proceed to love handles.
모든 지방 세포는 옆구리살이 된다.
Don't you worry about cholesterol, lung cancer, love handles?
넌 콜레스테롤이랑 폐암, 뱃살 이런 건 걱정도 안 하니?
To make things worse your love handles are starting to dangle.
거기에 뱃살까지 늘어나고 있다.
dangle : (무엇이)(달랑)매달리다 / (무엇을)매달리게 들다, (무엇을 들고)달랑거리다
ex. Apple dangles on the tree.
사과가 나무에 주렁주렁 매달려 있다.
She likes earrings that dangle.
그녀는 흔들거리는 귀걸이를 좋아해.
She dangled her car keys nervously as she spoke.
그녀는 말을 하면서 불안한 듯 자동차 키를 달랑거렸다.
9.
make love
: 섹스(성관계)를 하다
to have sex
ex. You and I used to make love three times a day.
너랑 나는 하루에 세 번씩 사랑을 나누곤 했었지.
That was the first night we slept together and didn't make love.
사랑을 나누지 않고 같이 잔 첫 번째 밤이었어.
You know how many calories are burnt when you make love?
너는 관계를 할 때 얼마나 많은 칼로리가 소모되는지 알고 있니?
How often do you make love?
얼마나 자주 관계를 갖니?
10.
to lose (one's) lunch
: 게우다, 토하다
to vomit; to throw up
ex. Are you gonna lose your lunch?
너 토할 것 같니?
You've made me lose my lunch.
너가 날 토하게 만들었어.
I think I'm gonna lose my lunch and I might get sick.
나 토할 것 같아서 아플지도 몰라.
11.
not the sharpest tool in the shed
: 둔한(멍청한) 사람
a person who is not smart; stupid; an idiot
*당사자 앞에서 직접적으로 말하는게 아닌, 제 3자를 묘사할 때 사용되는 완곡 표현.
ex. He's just not the sharpest tool in the shed.
그는 머리가 좀 둔한 사람이야.
Please God, please open my heart. Send me a sign. We both know I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed.
제발 하나님, 내 마음을 열어주세요. 계시를 주세요. 우리 모두 내가 멍청한 거 알잖아요.
12.
kick the bucket
: 죽다
die (informal)
pass away 가 formal 한 느낌이라면, kick the bucket은 informal하다.
ex. It was time for him to kick the bucket.
그가 죽을 때가 왔다.
And I also don't wanna see you kick the bucket.
그리고 난 너가 죽는 걸 보고 싶지 않아.
What? am I gonna kick the bucket sooner than I thought?
뭐라고요? 제가 생각하는 것보다 더 빨리 죽을 거라고요?
I'd like to enjoy it all before I kick the bucket.
나는 내가 죽기 전에 모든 것을 즐기고 싶어.
